Field Notes:
The Holga factory continues to keep churning out plastic goodies and this one is super. Super wide that is! The Holga 120 pan camera boasts an incredible almost 180° view. Following along the lines of their 120 WPC pinhole camera, this model adds a shutter and lens assembly to the mix. The camera features a pretty decent viewfinder, dual hot shoes, and a tripod mount. It has your typical Holga zone focusing and usual cloudy/sunny aperture switch. A nice touch is a spirit (bubble) level that allows you to make sure your camera is level when using a tripod. The camera back suggests ISO 400 speed film for best effects but the manual does say 100 speed is OK with sunny days. Just remember your fixed shutter speed is about 1/100 second unless of course using the bulb shutter mode. Loading your film is just like any 120 Holga camera. Make sure you leave the film selector switch on the camera back set at 12. When advancing your film after each shot, you have to advance to an odd number. This will keep your exposures from overlapping due to its panoramic format. Shooting with the 120 Pan was fun. It really is like any other Holga except for the fact of its size. You need to make sure you hold its larger body steady when hand holding. If you decide to use a tripod, they do recommend the Holga Shutter Release Set (SRS-120). For this test I loaded the camera with some expired Fuji NPS 160. The results were favorable to my lighting conditions at the time, but in the future I would probably use 400 speed film as I do most of the time with Holgas. Since your shooting panos, remember you only get 6 pictures with a roll of 120 film. The format is 6x12 and that makes for some great sized negs! If your into wide pano style photography, then I would definitely recommend getting one. Cant wait to get this baby down to the shore! Light Leaks Magazine- End of an Era

With a very sad heart, I have to report that Light Leaks magazine is ending with issue 19. It has been a great experience working with Mike Barnes and all involved from the very beginning. What started out as an idea on the www.toycamera.com forums, turned out to be something I think every toy camera shooter can be proud of. There was nothing like this magazine on the market. Truly put together by real toy camera users who sacrificed their time and talents to make a magazine we all wanted. Its been a great honor to be associated with this project and people over the years. October 2005 seems like an eternity ago, but I'll never forget that first day I held issue 1 in my hands. Thanks for everything Light Leaks, I'm going to miss you.

Here is Mike's formal announcement:

As you know, we have struggled to keep Light Leaks in print over the past year. We had an excellent plan—with the addition of the Light Leaks Shop and Holgapalooza we felt the financial difficulties could be resolved. Unfortunately those additions required more of our own time. With a growing young family, free time has quickly become our most precious commodity.

While we enjoyed working on Light Leaks over the years, we have come to a point where we must focus on our own careers to support our family. My own interest in toy camera photography has always been a hobby, not a profession. Unfortunately as much as I loved putting together Light Leaks I spent most of my time putting together a magazine about toy cameras, but not actually being able to use those toy cameras myself!

Contributing to each issue of Light Leaks magazine was (I think) an excellent use of my time, and I think all those who contributed will feel the same way. It was always a labour of love for an end product that never lacked in quality. For all of you that have been scoffed at for wielding your beloved low-fi cameras, Light Leaks represented you and why you love what you do.

For current subscribers, you believed in us, and we thank you for that. We would be honoured to have you consider your unfulfilled subscription a donation into helping us pay our final printing payments. We can offer you some of the remaining back issues that we have left, or some of the digital versions we have created (which also includes The Toycam Handbook), however supplies are limited. In addition to creating some revenue from the digital issues, we have had to sell off our entire store inventory to help get this last issue to you.

We will be closing the Light Leaks shop, but keeping www.lightleaks.org open along with links to the digital versions.

We want to thank you all for supporting our humble magazine, and especially to those who contributed over the years, particularly Gary Moyer, Steph Parke, and of course my wife, Rachel who did a lot of the work behind the scenes. Best to you all in your future low-fi photographic adventures!

This was something special. My mother had held on to this camera from when I was a kid. I found some 126 film and had to bring him back to life. I shot these at a 4th of July parade in Maywood, NJ. You would not believe how many people commented on this camera. For the processing I was lucky enough to come across the good people at http://www.oldschoolphotolab.com/ They know film and do it right! They were able to develop my 126 film, and provide great prints and digital files (CD). Uncropped as requested to boot. My negs were sleeved nicely and I also got an "I Love Film" bumper sticker. A History of Toy Cameras by C. Gary Moyer

**The following is by no means an entire history of toy cameras. What I have done is pieced together the information I have acquired and read over the years. I have cited my sources and to the best of my ability have outlined my understanding of the beginning of the toy camera movement.

Early Years:

The original Diana camera was introduced in the 1960’s by the Great Wall Plastics Company, Hong Kong. It was a very cheap and plastic camera that cost under a few bucks. The Diana used cheap and readily available 120 film of the time. This very camera paved the way for toy camera photography as we know it.

An article titled- “$1 Dollar Toy Teaches Photography” penned by Elizabeth Truxall appeared in a 1971 issue of Popular Photography magazine. Elizabeth was the Chairman, Dept. of Photography at Ohio University, Athens. She had her class utilize the Diana camera when some students complained of a lack of fancy camera equipment. By using the Diana, everyone was on the same page equipment wise, and had to rely on their vision to make pictures. Nancy Rexroth was a graduate student of this class and went on to publish the book Iowa (Violet Press 1977) and had a portfolio in the Aperture-Snapshot issue (1974).

An article titled “Visions of Diana” by Don Cyr appears in the fall 1977 issue of Popular Photography. This was a nice article on the use and processes of using a Diana camera. The second part of the article was called “Diana Derivations- a portfolio by Arnold Gassan” which showed images and commentary of his use of the Diana camera.

“The Diana Show” by David Featherstone and the Friends of Photography book. In 1979, The Friends of Photography had a show of Diana images from various photographers. A catalog of this work was put into book form called “The Diana Show”. It represents the work of 43 photographers and is copyrighted 1980. (ISBN 0-933286-17-l)

Various other publications developed over the years with toy camera work appearing such as- “Angels at the Arno” Eric Linbloom, “The Creative Camera” Nancy Howell-Koehler, and Shots magazine issues- 12, 53, and 68. A great interview with Nancy Rexroth appears in Shots issue 65.

Some noted names to Google when looking into the early days of toy cameras: Nancy Rexroth, Mark Sink, Ted Orland, Gordon Stettinius, Jonathan Bailey, and Mary Ann Lynch to name a few.

The Holga is born:

In 1982 Mr. Lee and his Universal Electronics company dropped the Holga camera onto the market. Known mostly for being a flash and accessory company, Mr. Lee looked on how to branch out into the camera market. Since the camera was going to be marketed mostly at the time to mainland China, the cost had to be low and perform consistently to survive. By the early 90’s, word spread of this camera and orders were coming in from overseas. People really loved the quirks and toy like qualities from this plastic beauty. Today, there are numerous models and accessories to choose from. Hats off to Mr. Lee for keeping this vision going even though he may not have recognized its significance back in 1982.

The Online Community:

The very first place that I came across online for toy camera individuals to gather was www.toycamera.com. It was started by HJ Seely and Kurt Stepnitz who were members of GAC. ( Great Lakes Area Plastic Cameras) They talk about their humble beginnings in an article dated July 4^th 1999 in Photofreak magazine. After Harv and Kurt left, the reigns of toycamera.com were turned over to Mike Barnes who steered us through a whole new chapter. This included the publishing of our first book titled “Toycamera”. It was a released in 2004 and included the work of 26 photographers (myself included) who frequented the website. The next project was a few calendars sold thru Lulu self publishing and some print swaps. In 2005 we produced the “Toycam Handbook”. I was heavily involved in this and at the time, it was the only and most thorough book on toy camera photography ever produced. It still sells very well to this day as it is a very valuable resource for someone who wants to get involved in toy camera photography. Another great publication that still continues to this day developed at toy camera.com is Light Leaks magazine. Produced in house my its members and is the only currently produced print magazine that specializes in toy camera photography. http://www.lightleaks.org/

Toy cameras take off:

The last few years have seen a great growth in toy camera and lo-fi photography. Gallery shows, publications, online groups, and endless supply of new toy cameras coming to market. This will probably be considered the heyday as its popularity has sky rocketed due to the internet. No longer considered an “underground” movement, you can now buy toy cameras at trendy stores such as Lomography and Urban Outfitters. I have even seen a Lomo camera at Target. There are plenty of books on the subject with the majority consisting of self published guides or photo books thanks to online self publishing companies.

Finally got around to testing out my Minox Leica M3 replica camera. It uses Minox 8x11 sized film, very tiny negatives. The picture shows how small the camera is compared to a normal roll of 35mm film. The film was developed by the good people at www.bluemooncamera.com The prints are made on 5x5 sized paper with an image size of 3.25x 2.25 inches.
